Abstract marble is processed for Industrial purposes by being cut and polished and use as decoration, making it economically valuable. Most of us curious to know how is marble formed for the construction purpose. During the cutting process of marble, twenty to thirty percent of a marble block converts to marble powder. This type of waste material is generated in substantial volumes worldwide which poses an environmental concern. Marble is a metamorphic rock which is formed from the transformation of untainted limestone. This rock has been used extensively as a building material since ancient times, particularly for decorative use. Turkey possesses forty percent of the total marble reserve worldwide, and 7000000 tons of marble have been emitted annually of which 75% have been administered in almost 5000 plants. Studies Performed

Studies were done to determine the usage of waste marble in concrete as an admixture material or coarse aggregate and the properties of hardened concrete manufactured waste marble were investigated in detail. All results were compared signifying that waste marble could be utilized in concrete.

As an outcome of literature, the usage of waste marble in;

  • Conventional concrete mix
  • Self-compacting concrete mix and
  • Polymer concrete mix

were revealed. Waste marble powder was utilized as a binder in cement or as a coarse or fine aggregate in the sand when manufacturing normal concrete mix.

Waste marble was also used in general as fine aggregate in sand in SCC mix.

The most suitable substitute ratio of waste marble for the analyses that waste marble was used instead as a binder in cement in a standard concrete mix was determined as 5-10 percent. This ratio indicated improved mechanical and physical properties of regular concrete. The reason being for the superior properties of hardened concrete were clarified as such:

  • The compressive force may be as a result of the active SiO2 in waste marble powder that reacts with the Ca (OH)2 in the concrete to create secondary calcium silicate hydrate and allow it to be structurally dense and chemically stable.
  • The utilization of waste marble powder in concrete has revealed to have a filler effect. The reason being that the filler is a lethargic addition and it can be viewed as ultra-fine aggregates which fill voids in the concrete. The porosity in the concrete matrix is physically reduced by making use of waste marble powder. This ensures that the concrete is consisting of an essential binding agent which is developed through chemical hydration of calcite and C3A.

In conclusion to several studies performed, the assumption is made that from the analysis and test results, marble powder can be used as a partial substitute of cement up to fifteen percent in composite cement.  Also, an increase in durability characteristics was noticed without lessening the compressive strength of the concrete.
